I am a native Texan, but have also lived in Ohio, DC, and Maryland. You are right about the high cost of living in Texas, but there is a little more to it, as well.
High-Cost - one of the worse issues here is health care. While health care is sliding all over the America, it is really terrible here in TX. Individual health care plans do not cover maternity, and usual will not cover anything you even discussed with your dr. for the last 12 months before you join.
The Good News - housing costs are lower here than in most metropolitan areas. We live in a nice neighborhood, middle-class, 2 story, 2400 square ft house. This cost under $200,000 dollars. Housing itself can be much more affoardable. Now, if you could only afford the property insurance, one of the highest in the nation!
