Private schools usually have a smaller staff than public schools. More people are involved in the process of hiring teachers.
Private schools tend to be on a tighter budget than most public schools. Staff is much smaller at private schools, so many staff members have multiple roles where at a public school, staff members’ roles are more defined. Teachers looking for a teaching job at a public or private school will have to go through an interviewing process. Each school may have different guidelines and expectations for the interviewing process. It is best to find out as much information about the school when applying for a job.
Some private schools attend job fairs to recruit potential educators. However, many do not attend because of the size and budget of their schools. So, where else do they advertise for teaching positions? Some advertise in newspapers, online, or affiliate groups, for example religious or specialized interest. The most common method of advertising is word of mouth.
When applying at a private school, you may speak to the principal directly, in person or over the phone. It is not a surprise when the principal may sound informal as he or she speaks with you about a potential or possible opening. You may get a few questions asked over the phone or in person.
Some private schools may give you a packet to fill out. This packet could range from one page to ten pages. The application may ask personal questions that are legal. Also extra questions may include what kind of class management methods, lesson plans, and other related school and classroom issues. Make sure you have a resume or curriculum vitae prepared, as well.
Once you are able to secure an interview, be sure to know about that private school, so that you may appear well informed. If possible, prepare a portfolio of your teaching experiences. Some interviewers may ask to see this.
At the interview, there may be between two to five people to interview you. These people may be of the school board members, parents, and teachers. Each may ask questions, or just listen and offer their opinions when they are meeting together. It is important to make eye contact and to appear confident. The interview may take anywhere between one to two hours.
After the interview is over, interviewers will discuss the outcome of each interviewee. There is probably an evaluation they may fill out to be used as a guide as they compare interviewees, and decide whom to hire. The candidate will get a phone call of acceptance.
