A career with a future - who doesn't want that! One of the hottest trends in the healthcare industry right now is a midwife. They are proactive and very well qualified. It may just be the career move for you. A certified nurse midwife is a Registered Nurse with advanced training in midwifery that allows them to care for healthy expectant mothers in a variety of settings. A midwife will conduct regular examinations during the pregnancy, manage labor and delivery, and care for the mother and child after delivery. The job may also involve preventative care, counseling, prescribing medication (in most US states), conducting clinical research and teaching. It is a breakthrough in healthcare choice for women as midwifery is now legal and recognized in 50 states. Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) provides all aspects of prenatal health care that spans from emotional and physical support to the mother to postnatal counseling. A certified nurse midwife must take and pass a mandatory accredited program, where they study clinical elements of obstetrical care. They also perform complete prenatal care including abdominal and pelvic examinations and evaluations. Another important service that a CNM provides is educating women and their families about childbirth methods, infant care, nutrition, and proper exercise. In modern times, a midwife will now work very closely with obstetricians and other physicians, to ensure the best care for both mother and child; especially when the case requires medical attention or medication. Midwives are now recognized as an integral part of the healthcare community and play a vital and necessary role in drastically reducing the maternal and infant death rate in the United States. Education and Training RequiredTo start with, you must have a Bachelors Degree in Nursing, and hold a valid RN license in your state. With this in hand, you can continue to take a specialized program that is offered in most states that will provide education and instruction in prenatal, postpartum, newborn care, gynecology, and the care of women in the childbearing cycle. The program takes one or two years and when successfully completed, you will be required to pass an entrance exam governed and administered by The American College of Nurse Midwives. If you are a high school or college student and considering a career as a midwife, here is a basic list of courses that will help as your foundation for a nursing education: biology, chemistry, algebra, health occupations, medical professions education, psychology, and sociology. Salary ExpectationsMidwives earn a very decent income and on a national scale earn a considerably higher per annum salary that an general RN. Depending on where you practice, a midwife can expect to earn $74,752 (low), $82,238 (median) and $87,640 (high). These are for clinical practice positions such as hospitals. Those that dare to venture out onto their own and set up a private practice can earn over $100K depending on how many hours per week you wish to work and how many clients you want to devote your private practice. Employment OpportunitiesCertified nurse midwives work in hospitals, health maintenance organizations, birthing centers, public health departments, doctor's offices, community service centers and clinics. Some midwives have their own private practices.
