Texas, T.Drake
Cowboys, oil and wide open spaces, Texas is filled with friendly people and lots of wealth and industry. How would your job and salary size up in the big state?

This is the second in a State Series of Job Analysis. For this article, we will be reviewing the employment horizon for the State of Texas. Home of the Dallas Cowboys, sprawling ranches and money; you may consider Texas an excellent location to move to for career and family reasons. In terms of population, Texas is 2nd largest in the nation with only California being more populated. However, you may be surprised to know that Texas is ranked 42nd and well above the national unemployment rate of 5.5%. Additionally, in regards to the median household income, once again Texas falls well below the national average of $44,400, ranking 40th overall. Indeed there is a lot of wealth in the State of Texas and numerous employers that pay handsomely.

The key to success is finding the right employer, the ideal opportunity and a community where the cost of living is not exorbitant. Stay away from Austin and Dallas Texas as both these cities have some of the highest costs of living in the entire county, even above New York, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Demographic Information

  • Population 22,118,500
  • Labor Force 11,035,400
  • Unemployment Rate 6.1%
  • Median Household Income $41,300
