Many boomers will choose to work after retirement, but most will want to do something new and different. Here are some suggestions for fun and creative jobs for seniors.
You’ve worked as an accountant, custodian, school teacher, cook or funeral director for over 40 years and now it’s time to retire. What will you do with all of that free time? You say you want to continue to work, but with more flexibility, less hours and less stress. And although you enjoyed your profession, you want to try something new, maybe something a little “fun”. Finding a job like this is not impossible. There are many fun and creative jobs out there for retirees. Here are a few suggestions.
Sports Arenas/Convention Centers are large employers. It takes many crew members to ensure that a sports event or rock concert goes off without a hitch. Some of the positions require direct contact with the public, positions like Ticket Sales, Ticket Taker, Usher, Banquet Server, Concessions or Event Security. Other positions are more behind the scenes. These might include Crew Members who set up and tear down for events, Event Planners, Computer Operations/Graphics and Promotions/Group Sales. Arena employment comes with many benefits including potentially meeting some of your favorite athletes/stars, and attending sporting events and/or concerts for free.
Golf Course Jobs - If you enjoy golfing, there couldn’t be a better place to work than the golf course. There are several job opportunities at courses and country clubs including Golf Course Ranger, Golf Course/Golf Cart Maintenance, Food Service, Sales (in the Pro Shop) and Promotions/Marketing. Many golf courses offer employee discounts, and some even allow free use of the golf course. This is a great benefit if you golf a lot.
Freelance Writing - Many people dream of being a writer. As a retiree, you have many life experiences and tidbits of wisdom to share with others. Why not put them on paper and even get paid to do so. Write for an on-line media company like Suite 101, freelance with your local newspaper and/or submit your work for publication with a national magazine such as Better Homes & Gardens.
Marina Employment - If you love the water, why not spend your time working at a marina. Marinas need Boat Cleaners, Fuel Attendants and Harbormasters/ Managers. Some larger marinas may also hire for Boat Instructors and Tour Guides. In many states marina jobs are seasonal.
Hobby Jobs - Teach knitting at a hobby shop, piano at your local community center, or sell antiques at a consignment shop. If you enjoy photography, consider employment with a department store photo studio, like those at Sears or Wal-Mart. You might also consider selling your art/wares, or launching a website to teach and educate others concerning your hobby or particular interest. As a webmaster, you can make money through sponsors or programs like Google Ads.
Retail Jobs - So you always wanted to be a make-up artist to the stars. It’s not too late. Maybe you’ll never work with the stars, but it’s not too late to become a make-up artist. Start a business with a company like Mary Kay, or work in a cosmetics department of a large department store like Macy’s or Lord & Taylor. Sell other items you are passionate about like jewelry, china or even motorcycles. Retail establishments offer flexible hours and give discounts to their employees.
