Job interviews are an opportunity for candidates to let prospective employers know why they are right for the job on offer. Preparation is key in getting the job.

Applying for a new job and preparing for a successful job interview is a nerve racking experience for many people who are changing jobs or for those who are entering the job market for the first time. Screening and job interview procedures change constantly. This means that it is not sufficient to go by past experience and expect that to help land you your dream job. Candidates must be thoroughly prepared to stand a good chance of securing the job that they have applied for. Here are some of the most common questions that are asked at job interviews and how they should be answered.

The answer may seem to be a fairly obvious: to secure employment in order to pay the mortgage and all other bills. But prospective employers will not be looking for a financial run down of why candidates have applied for the job. They will know that already. They want to see drive and enthusiasm for the job and a willingness to contribute to the overall success of the company. That means candidates must avoid talking about their personal finances (or lack thereof) and stay focused on the job description.

Interviewers do not want to hear that you have a wife, three children two cats and a dog. They want to find out about your qualifications and how they will match the job on offer. This is the time to “sell yourself” and let the employer know why you are right for the job.

This can be a tricky question to answer, particularly if candidates left their last job on a bad note. It is unwise to list the previous employer’s shortcomings. Instead, focus on some other reasons why you left. Do you plan on furthering your career? If so, did your last job limit your desire to do so? It is better to mention such issues and avoid disparaging comments about previous colleagues or the employer.

Prospective employers can put candidates on edge when they ask such questions. They do not expect to hear of all your mistakes in your last job. They want to know of a weakness, but more importantly, they want to see how you were able to overcome it and still be productive in your work.

Some people can answer this question easily, as they have an idea of where they want to be and how they will get there. But for others, this is a difficult question and not quite as easy to answer. Think of some job related ambitions that you want to achieve and look at how you can reach your goals.

The most important thing to remember during a job interview is to be honest. Do not try to lie during the interview to get a job. Employers can often tell when candidates are lying. If they are in doubt, they will do background checks and find out the truth for themselves. Liars will not be successful. Answer questions positively and to the best of your ability. Honest candidates are more successful at getting the job they want.
